宮崎国際大学は、建学の精神「礼節・勤労」のもと、我が国で初めて英語でリベラル・アーツ教育を行う大学として誕生しました。教授陣の8割が外国人教員という国際的環境の中で、少人数対話型授業、クリティカル・シンキングに基づくアクティブ・ラーニング授業、ティームティーチング授業等、また海外研修等、本学独自の授業法を実践しています。

本学は、今、大学教育に強く求められている「教養教育の重視」「グローバル人材の育成」「英語による授業」等の教育では日本の先駆者です。この実績をもっと発信し、地域社会・国際社会で貢献できる大学を目指します。

現代は、21世紀の知識基盤社会を迎え、グローバル化が進む国際化社会と言われています。その中で、「大学がなすべきことは何か」を考えると、「学問の発展、科学技術の発展、人類社会の発展に寄与できるところの豊かな人間性を備え、バランスの取れた知識を持つ人材の育成」であると言えます。本学の教育は、まさにこのことを実践しているのです。学生諸君は、外国人教員と面と向き合って勉学にチャレンジしてもらいますので、初めは英語で学ぶ授業に戸惑いと不安がありますが、段々と楽しくなります。2年生は海外研修（後期）があります。ここで一段と英語や国際的教養が身に付き、社会人基礎力が養われます。本学でのリベラル・アーツ教育は学年進行とともに4年間の学びを通したプログラムとなっています。この4年間の学びを修了した暁には、驚くほど豊かな知性を持った人間性に富んだ自分を発見するでしょう。一例として、卒業生の航空業界での活躍を見ると、過去7年で24名がCA、GH等々として活躍しています。

本学のキャンパスは、儒学者安井息軒先生の生家と当時の学問所遺跡のすぐ近くで江戸時代の学問発祥の地「忍ケ丘」にあります。キャンパスは緑に囲まれた環境にあり、じっくりと勉学に励むことが出来ます。本学が立地する宮崎市は、一年を通して温暖で冬の厳しさもなく、自然豊かな中で、自らの志に向かって、心と体を鍛え、学業と部活動に励み、可能性にチャレンジするには、大変過ごし易いところです。大学の教職員は、有意義な学生生活が送れるよう全力でサポートします。

NAUGURAL ADDRESS

April 1, 2013　

On April 1, 2013, I was appointed the third president of Miyazaki International College. I look forward to your kind cooperation.

Founded on the educational philosophy of “Respect and Diligence”, Miyazaki International College is the first institution in Japan to offer a liberal arts education in English. We practice a unique style of pedagogy made possible through small, discussion-based classes, courses where active learning is actualized through critical thinking, team-teaching and study abroad, and an environment where non-Japanese instructors account for 80% of the faculty.

MIC is a pioneer in Japan, where university education today cries out for “greater importance on the liberal arts”, “development of global human resources”, and “classes taught in English”. As president, my goal is to put greater effort into making our achievements known, and in doing so, further promote the development of the College as an active contributor to both regional and global society.

With the advent of the 21st century, the modern world has become a knowledge society, an international society in which globalization is being constantly promoted. In a world such as ours, we must ask ourselves what role the university should play. Surely, it must be to “promote the development of academics, science and technology, and the development of human resources equipped with a rich sense of humanity and a well-balanced base of knowledge, allowing them to contribute to the evolution of human society”. The education Miyazaki International College provides does just that. Though students often experience some initial hesitation and anxiety at collaboratively engaging in their studies with our international faculty, the experience becomes increasingly enjoyable. Study abroad in the fall semester of the second year further hones and promotes students’ English proficiency and international learning, and cultivates the fundamental capabilities expected of members of our society. Opportunities for learning in the liberal arts are provided through a comprehensive four-year program. Upon completion of their four years of scholarship and learning, students discover that they have achieved a rich, surprising degree of intellect and humanism. The 24 cabin attendants and ground staff who have been actively contributing to the airline industry, and the 31 English instructors officially hired by the Prefecture in the past seven to ten years, for example, are testimony to the outcomes of our educational program.

Located in “Shinobigaoka”, the birthplace of academia in the Edo period, the MIC campus is situated close to the remains of the home and school of Confucian scholar, Yasui Sokken. The lush natural surroundings provides an environment in which students can focus on their studies. With its year-round warm climate and mild winters and abundant natural beauty, Miyazaki City is also a comfortable city in which to live. It is an environment perfectly suited to a life where students pursue personal ambitions, sharpen their bodies and minds, and engage fully in both studies and club activities as they face the challenges of the myriad possibilities available to them. The faculty and staff of MIC will make every effort to ensure that your college life is a rich and worthwhile experience.
